Turn Your House Into a Home

What makes a house a home?

The feeling of being at home can’t be bought. It comes from an intimate relationship between us and our living spaces. Our homes shape us just as we shape them. When we lavish our time and creativity on our homes, they give us comfort, inspiration and beauty in return.

We nurture ourselves through the choices we make. When we focus on what we love, we fashion our life around our personal sense of balance and harmony. A home that is filled with comfort, balance and harmony is a home that resonates strongly with everyone living within it.

While design and architecture focus on aesthetics, form and function, the feeling created is seldom considered. Yet it is the feeling that inspires and comforts us. It doesn’t matter if your house is big or small, in the city or in the country or what type of dĂ©cor you prefer. What matters is that you take the time to create a space that resonates with positive energy, a space that really feels good to you, a place that welcomes and embraces you with a sense of comfort, beauty, style and inspiration.

How can you make your house into a home filled with comfort, balance and harmony? While we are all different from one another and our needs are unique, there are some basic steps we can all take to create a personal connection to our home.

1. The feeling of home begins outside. Take a look at the entry to your home. Is it easy to find? Is it clean? Is it well lit? Does it draw you to it?
2. Take a walk through your home. Walk slowly, pay attention to the impressions you get as you move through your home. Are there areas that feel cluttered and unfinished?
3. Notice the way your furniture is arranged. Does it welcome you into the room or does it seem to push you back out, away from the seating area?
4. Observe how the light enters and fills your rooms. Is there a way to capture more light or use the room in a way that enables you to enjoy the beauty of the natural light as it enters the room?
5. Pay attention to the objects you have in your rooms. Do you love the way they look? If not, consider arranging them differently, or placing them in different rooms. You just might find that moving things around creates rooms that are more interesting, friendlier, and more functional.
6. What colors do you have in your home? Are they warm and inviting? If not, consider adding mid-tone colors in a range that you feel drawn to. Don’t be afraid to add color, whether through your accessories or with paint. Color creates warmth and a sense of welcome. Plain white walls tend to be cold and uninviting, making it hard to create that personal connection that is so important in our homes.

Our homes should be so comfortable to us that walking in the door feels as warm and delightful as getting a hug. Take the time to create a space that embraces the essence of your true personality. When home embraces our sense of comfort, beauty, style and inspiration it not only looks good, it feels good. Home is a good place to be.
