(Victoria Gill, BBC News) The Indonesian rainforest is worth more standing than felled say researchers. A new analysis has shown that payments to reduce carbon emissions from the forests could generate more income than palm oil production on deforested land. Protecting the forests could become profitable under a proposed scheme called Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (Redd). In the journal Conservation Letters, they say this scheme will help protect threatened forests.

Richard Branson, the well-known entrepreneur and founder of the Virgin group, is the Prince’s Rainforests Project’s Supporter of the Week. I just watched a short video (embedded below) with his message of support and I thought you might like to as well, and sign up as a supporter of The Prince’s Rainforests Project. Adding your name costs nothing, but without it, deforestation might just cost us the Earth: http://www.rainforestsos.org/branson The future of the rainforest is our future too. Learn more about the fight to save the rainforest at The Prince’s Rainforest Project.

The United Kingdom’s Prince Charles is an environmentalist who has worked for many years toward helping to preserve our planet. Two years ago he began The Prince’s Rainforests Project. He has launched an Internet project asking for support. The focus of the publicity campaign is a 90 second film featuring the actors Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, and Robin Williams, along with the Dali Lama, Pele, Joss Stone, Kermit the Frog, and Princes William and Harry, and an animated frog as the symbol of the Rainforest. Using this film, social networking, and the Internet, Prince Charles hopes to build a group of world citizens calling for global change. I urge you to go check out the site at http://www.rainforestsos.org. There you will find more educational material on the how and why this is such an important issue. You can also follow them on Twitter at http://twitter.com/rainforestSOS. If you want to show your support for The Rainforest Project, add your name and email to the widget box below. It’s a great cause and will make you feel more in touch with your spirit.
